What happens when a couple grows apart, love turns to tolerance and the honeysuckled bloom of marriage becomes vinegar? Playwright Basil Dawkins answers this question most effectively through his new play Divorce Papers, where the rigors of relationships are tested and bonds are broken, strengthened and in some instances reunited.
The play centres on Augustus and Grace Geoffe, a wealthy mature couple who are rich in material things, but severely impoverished when it comes to love and affection for each other.
Truth be told, they can barely stand the sight of each other, especially since Augustus (Gussy) served Grace divorce papers. They have been married 36 years, however, the union is anything but harmonious as 25years ago Grace (Barbara McCalla) found out that Gussy (Oliver Samuels) had an affair with their helper, which resulted in her becoming pregnant -a mistake, Grace has never made Gussy forget.
However, the plot thickens when it turns out that Grace has her own agenda and own young ‘Mr. body beautiful,’ Wayne (Dennis Titus) prompting distress Gussy in getting both love and legal advice from Stacey (Maylynne Lowe ) birthing new family dynamics.
