Story by Damion Anglin

Born to do music; that is how TP Records producer Ricardo Tristan Palmer describes his love affair with the creative art form. Son of veteran Reggae Star, of a similar name, Triston Palmer; it was a no-brainer that his path would also follow the same musical journey given his background and exposure to the industry.

In recalling what pushed him to enter the business, Palmer shares that “Yuh know a di King of the Dancehall get up one day and tell mi seh mi a heritage inna music”; and in trying to find his footing and the path he would take, Palmer decided to become a producer. His decision manifested a great partnership between the two as he has toured with and currently serves as one of Beenie Man’s producers and credits the legend for teaching him all he knows about the business.

Throughout his career in production, Palmer has worked with artistes such as Johnny Osbourne and Louie Culture. However, there was something missing for the producer, which he could not at first identify. He quickly realized that what was missing was a musical

collaboration with his famous father. This resulted in the single “Blue Light” which featured his father Triston Palmer and dancehall icons Beenie Man and Bounty Killer. Palmer through TP records has also produced hit rhythms such as the “Party Shot Riddim”, “World Star Riddim” and “Twinkle Boss Riddim” among many others which feature artistes including Beenie Man, Iyara, Predita, Jahvinci, Macka Diamond and Konshens.

In addition to producing, Palmer has also thrown his hat into the ring of artist management and entrepreneurship. The first artist under his management is the former Magnum Kings and Queens of Dancehall contestant “Twinkle Brain”. Palmer, having seen the potential in the artist, decided to forge a musical partnership in order to change the direction of Jamaican Music. “We have to find back wi roots and wi culture”, shared Palmer as he reflected on current Jamaican music compared to songs of his father’s generation. It is this charge that has influenced the producer to ensure that he doesn’t produce slack or violent music but instead creates music

that inspires and motivates. Influenced by the natural sounds of the environment and his innate destiny to create hit rhythms, the producer shared that most of his work happens in the yard when him a “bill a vibes” and then he goes to the studio to fix it up. The self-motivated producer has big dreams for his career and is manifesting that one day at an international music festival he will hear a song being performed and know that “a fi mi song dat”. His passion is, has been and will always be music. Music is a part of his entire family; from his many siblings to his own children, he shares that they all have music in their blood. He has even begun to mentor his younger brother towards a career in music. As a child of music royalty, he shares that he and his siblings have never felt pressured to live up to their father’s name but he has taught them the importance of humility and exclusivity. Palmer believes that more work is needed in the industry. New and upcoming artistes wanting to achieve international success must put in the work and also take a page out of Beenie Man and Bounty Killer’s book when it comes to performing and engaging an audience. But for Palmer’s musical journey, the sky is the limit; and what he does next will be worth all the buzzz.
