Performing at the 2021 Jazz and Blues music festival was a dream come true for singer/songwriter Zia Benjamin. The recording artiste and talented creative, has dreamt about performing on the big stage since she was much younger and watching from the side lines.
When the music festival went on hiatus, it seemed as though actualizing that dream was next to impossible, until she got wind of the festival’s return through a friend participating in the event’s Band Quest. Through the diligence of her team, she was able to make contact with the event organizers and secure her slot in the virtual staging of the event in March 2021. This was a
welcomed opportunity and change from having to sneak into the event as a member of an artiste’s band; a humorous memory she shared as to how she managed to see the show one year when all her friends, except her, had passes for the event.
Zia’s life has always been a creative journey.
“I came out the womb crying and didn’t stop for
3 weeks”, the singer shared, attributing that experience to the early development of her vocals. She further recalled, “My first time walking was to Michael Jackson”. to drawing as a way to interact with her peers. However, it was one day in her prep school music class that her vocal ability was discovered and its ability to command attention; a notion which both inspired and terrified her.
Over the years she has expanded the scope of her creative abilities and is confident in her diverse skillset of being a singer, songwriter, film and documentary producer, painter and fashion designer. With all that she is able to do, music has beenthe perfect platform for all her creative expressions.
She writes all her own music, directs all her own music videos and is the vision behind her fashion and creative direction. She manages her own career and spends a lot of her time planning, researching, and learning about the industry.
