Jamaican-Canadian poet, musician, and community activist Michael St. George has consistently engaged the middle ground between poetry and song in his work, and he achieves undoubted success with that field of experimentation, on this his fourth studio album. With evocative and commanding vocals accentuated by an arresting array of musical compositions, ‘Fight Your Fears ’ is a collection of poetic songs and musical poetry that immediately demands attention. It’s chockfull of rich verses that entice, engage, entertain and inspire. A marvellous marriage between inspirational and rebellious spoken word/dub poetry – and sometimes a blues-infused, sometimes rocking and wailing but always authentic and definitely absorbing reggae music – the album gets thumbs up as being worthy of
‘ear’ time.
A stand-out piece is ’Something Else’ – an inspirational invitation infused with haunting horns, and compelling chants that invoke a prayerful plea for us to ‘hold a bass an’ leggo di rhythm’. Other memorable tracks include the catchy and instructive ‘doom and gloom’ and of course, the thought-provoking and inspirational title track, which offers a combination of melody, message and motivation to which one can sing and dance in joyous wonder, and insights/ideas on which to chew and ponder.
