Harry Belafonte is to be honoured by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences. He will receive a humanitarian award for his work as an activist on racism and equality issues in November.
He was dubbed the “King of Calypso” for popularizing the Caribbean musicto an international audience in the 1950s, with hits such as the ‘Banana Boat Song’.
His more famous humanitarian acts were that of being a figure head of the Civil Rights Movement in American as well as marching with Martin Luther King Jnr. and AIDS awareness.
