An avid member of the Ashe Performing Arts Company for the past 11 years, Williams’ natural ability to capture your attention even as a
supporting vocalist is incredible. This is partially owing to his training at the Cathy Levy Academy for Performing Arts and studies at the Edna Manley College for Visual and Performing Arts. But foremost he possesses that indescribable X-factor that radiates light on any stage, even from the background.
“Ashe has harvested my performing arts career and has trained my talent into something people see and love. Out of that Ashe experience has attracted a supporting vocalist opportunity with the likes of Diana King in 2009 (to present), Digicel Rising Stars for the past 9 years and most recently with Tessanne Chin. It has been rewarding and I’m truly grateful,” beamed the spunky vocalist.
Still an active member of the group, Williams explains, “Ashe changed how it has operated over the years. When the late founder, Joseph Robinson passed in 2006 a lot of things changed; people stopped believing in the product and that’s just the truth. People thought Ashe was no longer a viable means of sustainability so members left – scattered all over the world – but the spirit of Ashe hasn’t changed at all.
“I would say my musical journey is one filled with continued surprises; as I grow, the journey appears to get a lot more interesting and it’s a sonic roller-coaster ride littered with moments that keeps me in awe,” explains the Jamaica College alum. With a vocal range equallyvoured suited to tasteful R&B jams, classic psychedelic funk, pearly ballads, and smooth Reggae covers, one would wonder why Williams has not embarked on a solo career path. Well, he says it is a calculated decision to steadily position himself for his magic moment.
“There is a certain amount of joy that I get when I can support someone and make their show more entertaining…right here and now I think that is my purpose. I think what supporting vocalists add to a stage is magic – when you sit in a crowd and listen to the lead vocalist it’s great, but when you listen to the harmonies coming together on a live platform it looks and sounds phenomenal; and that’s what people yearn for from live performances,” Williams explained.
Fuelled by the desire to become an artiste that takes persons on an emotional journey in a single performance, Williams is channeling the business ethics of King and the authentic love for music from Tessanne in hopes of making music sui generis.
With an image already etched for fame, always donning an impeccable style Williams says, “I have to embark on a solo career in the near future because I think it’s the ultimate way of rewarding myself after being a part of so many other success stories. I deserve a success story of my own as well. I plan on doing my first recording before the end of the year; it may take off and shock me like everything else in my career or it may just be another experience for me to learn from.”
It’s near impossible to predict or define what the future has in store for Williams; but one thing’s for sure, he has a vision set on stardom
and he will keep pushing the boundaries of success.
