For many of us, our path is chosen by the sum total of the actions we take. However, for Oneil Phoenix, he believes his path was bequeathed as he shares the July 23rd birthday with the late Emperor Haile Selassie.
Oneil Phoenix who goes by the musical name “LawGiver the Kingson” is a humble Rastafarian born in Kingston, Jamaica who spent the better part of his upbringing in Roadside, Islinton, St. Mary. His exposure to music is one that started from an early age as he was surrounded by the art form in various ways. It was his Uncles’ interest in the music scene; one owning a sound system and the other’s involvement in a Ska band as well as his father’s passion for collecting vinyl, that introduced the Kingson to music across genres.
His origin on the music scene however, dates back to the mid-90s and his current stake in the industry boasts an impressive track record of musical collaborations behind the scene and in his musical repertoire; including industry heavyweights Sly & Robbie and Cleveland “Clevie” Browne. Among his present undertakings is his EP “The Kingson from Kingston” which he released on January 7, 2021. The 7 track EP is a labour of love for the artiste.
“I want my listeners to feel the essence of Jamaica or like they are in the streets of Kingston” shared LawGiver, as he spoke to the impact he hopes his songs will create. The musician who also operates his own record label called “Imperishable Uprising” describes his sound as a combination of roots, soul, reggae, afrobeat and dancehall.
LawGiver describes himself as a jovial family man, motivator, husband and father with an interest in farming and sports, specifically boxing. His passion for music however, towers above all else as he spends most
of his time writing and creating music. His wife and manager shared that “He puts his heart and soul into his music”; a discipline which has resulted in the quality music he delivers. This determination is embodied in the philosophy which fuels his drive; a purpose articulated in his mantra which states that
“hard work will yield success”.
