Skip Marley: Prodigy in the Making?

Skip Marley: Prodigy in the Making? Skip Marley: Prodigy in the Making?

On February 12, 2017, a handsome young man graced the stage at the 59th Annual Grammy Awards show alongside Katy Perry to perform their hit collaboration Chained to the Rhythm. The performance was amazing, leading many to wonder who the featured artiste was.

It was none other than Skip Marley, the grandson of the legendary Bob Marley. Born to Cedella Marley and Dave Minto, Skip was raised with siblings Soul-Rebel and Saiyan. He was born on the beautiful and culturally rich island of Jamaica but migrated to Florida at the age of two.

He guarantees his upbringing was as that of any normal youth; education was primary. That idea, he confirms, was passed from his grandparents and filtered to his generation. Although he has only been doing music professionally for two years, he has been practicing for a long time. The encouragement especially came from his family who implored him to work hard and hone his craft; but no doubt his DNA also accounts for his musical genius.

Impressively, Skip has taught himself to play four musical instruments- the guitar, bass, drums, and piano. Eventually his mom hired teachers to further develop his natural skills as a musician.

With four singles under his belt: Lions, Cry to Me, Chained to the Rhythm, and a Spanish duet Llora Me; Skip modestly acknowledges that his career has only just begun. When asked how he would describe his music, the singer/songwriter who experiments with sounds and styles summed it up as Universoul music.

“My music stems from Reggae music. The music is everything and anything. It is an expression. It holds a message; in my music there are no borders….. My music is for everyone. A little bit of this. A little bit of that. It brings out great sounds that carry the message.”
