Educational and motivational, Take Three Giant Steps! is written for the young Jamaican citizen, with themes distilled from the Vision 2014 National Development Plan. The book follows a simple and believable story line that introduces readers to development goals, with stories aimed at unleashing the wealth of potential within each child, as they follow and learn form the experiences of Manny, an eleven-year old boy living in rural Jamaica.
Robinson has included poems and songs that can be used in class activities, or presented as performance pieces. The aim of the book is to contribute to awareness, identity, and citizenship, personal and civic responsibility. With chapter titles including ‘A Purpose for a Boy’, ‘A Whole New Dream’, ‘For All Jamaicans’, and ‘Values for Life’, the book is set to deliver just that. We meet characters such as Misses Turner, Walters and Jones who serve as guides for the young, helping Manny, Paula and the other children manoeuvre the space in which they live, while growing and crafting ideas of new possibilities and discoveries.
The inspiration that can be drawn from this book is summed up nicely by Miss Walters in one of her responses to ‘Manny,’ … you can be anything you want, go anywhere on the wings of eductation. Don’t limit yourself to what you see around you now. There is a lot more to see out in the world as you grow older and wiser, and learn more. You can succeed at something good as long as you put your mind to it. It does not matter if you are from a poor or humble home. Whta is important is what you do with the brain God gave you. Think big!
