If you’ve never witnessed or participated in carnival then you are missing a profound life experience. Carnival is more than scantily clad people gyrating to soca music in the streets. Carnival is a cultural experience that is held dear to the Caribbean and members of the Caribbean diaspora.
In Jamaica, the carnival season usually starts in January with a series of soca events that culminates in the highly anticipated Carnival Road March held in April during the Easter period. Jamaicans, however, are not only engaged in their local carnival activities. During this period, many persons also fly to other territories such as Trinidad and Miami to participate in their carnival celebrations. Carnival offers much excitement to its patrons and viewers. From the electrifying sensation that the music unearths, to the dazzling display of colours and designs in the carnival costumes, to the high energy, camaraderie and vibe that exudes from the revelers and fill the air; it is truly a wonder to witness and an even more breathtaking moment to experience firsthand.
However, after two years of waiting, it was finally time to touch road; 2022 was the year! The pandemic, however, did force some changes to the Carnival’s 2022 return. For the first time in its history, Carnival 2022 would not be held in April, but instead be staged in July. Mr. Dunn spoke to this change sharing that, “It (the pandemic) delayed Carnival from April 2020 to July 2022 and in the process, escalated our costs and inconvenienced our revelers”. He continues, indicating that “we actually only got the green light from government to stage the carnival in March”. He indicates that July was selected as the date for Carnival 2022 as “Two years is enough time”.
