The closest I have been to a Porsche prior to walking into ATL Motorsports’ Porsche showroom in New Kingston a few weeks ago, was when I watched the opening scene of the 2002 Nicholas Cage movie Gone in 60 Seconds on my television. In that scene, Givonnai Ribisi who played Kip sat in a car with two of his friends across the road from a Porsche Dealership as they admired the Porsche on display in the showroom. Fast forward sixteen (16) years and ATL Automotive has granted car enthusiasts, not just the opportunity to be up close and personal with a Porsche but also the opportunity to own one or two. The local car dealership known for its reputation of providing high quality, flamboyant, flashy, eye-catching luxury cars has introduced the Porsche brand to Jamaican roads through its subsidiary, ATL Motorsports.
“If you know the history of Porsche, you know the brand made its name on sports cars “
ATL has opened two showrooms strategically placed to ensure that the brand stands out from the chorus of other luxury vehicles. The Porsche Centre Kingston opened to grand fanfare on April 29, 2017, and the Porsche Centre Montego Bay followed soon thereafter on November 14, 2017. When quizzed about the preference for those two locations, Group Marketing Manager at ATL Automotive Christina Thwaites explained that “When ATL builds a showroom, we don’t just open one, we open two. Montego Bay often gets forgotten by businesses but as the second city, it’s a major player that can’t ever be overlooked. We believe in Western Jamaica, we believe in the people that live and work there and we believe they deserve the best of everything”.
On the other hand, she pointed out that, “Knutsford Boulevard was chosen as it represents a city style centre and is easily accessible to the public and those who work nearby. It also signifies our investment to the Jamaican economy to gentrify Knutsford Boulevard as the Hip Strip of Kingston. The Porsche Centre Kingston is complemented by an equally impressive Service Facility nearby on Oxford Road.”
But why Porsche? Thwaites revealed that ” ATL Automotive was founded 20 years ago on the basis that Jamaica deserves better. There are undoubtedly luxury brands already on the market which have been successful. However, there is only one Porsche and every Porsche model at its heart is a sports car,” she said. If you know the history of Porsche, you know the brand made its name on sportscars such as the 911 and the 356.
