In March 2020, like most countries around the world, Jamaica implemented a lockdown to control the spread of the global pandemic, COVID-19. The citizens demanded and looked for ways to carry out their day-to-day activities such as receiving and lending money along with making purchases; at one-point people even became wary of having to touch banknotes for fear of transmission of germs. Since the government encouraged the reduction of person-to-person contact to potentially slow the spread of the virus, the use of mobile money soared.
Mobile money is a technological service that stores funds in a secure electronic wallet, that can be accessed from a mobile phone. This service allows people to do their day-to-day money transactions in the comfort of their homes, or anywhere else they may be.
With a third of the world on some form of a lockdown or restricted movement as a measure to curb the spread of COVID-19, businesses that require face-to-face cash transactions are in jeopardy. Mobile money allows this to take place as these transactions can easily be done online or through your phone. Leading IT solutions provider, Advanced Integrated Systems (AIS) has provided a platform, Quisk, to carry out these necessary activities allowing individuals without bank accounts to participate in mobile money transactions.
AIS, in partnership with The National Commercial Bank (NCB), has created this simple, secure and convenient platform that enables customers to pay for goods and services and send money only by using their cellphone. With this mobile money account, you are not required to have the Internet, a smartphone, or to download any applications as you carry out these activities via text. All that one needs to sign up for a Quisk account is your phone number, TRN and a photo ID which can be done online or at any NCB branch. It is not required for you to have a bank account with any banking institution.
