“FOR ME, WRITING IS CHALLENGING BECAUSE OF HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO HAVE THE BLUEPRINT FOR THE ENTIRE CREATIVE PROCESS”
As the conceptualiser, creative genius and director of the film ‘Sprinter’, Storm Saulter is a man much in demand as the quality of his film speaks for itself, so much so that globally it has received rave reviews at numerous film festivals for its complexities in telling a story dissimilar from the typical portrayal of gangs, gun and gratuitous violence. Storm visited Buzzz Magaine and put us through our paces with ‘Sprinter’ and what it takes to not only make movies, but capture reality on a film reel.Supporting not just local filmmakers but those in the wider Caribbean is important to Saulter. “The film industry here is in a much more collaborative and cooperative mode. The Jamaica Film and Television Association (JAFTA) is doing great things. I am interested in the Caribbean immigration stories. My interest is having characters with a point of view from Jamaica and the Caribbean. It is about seeing the world from the eyes of Caribbean people because our perspective is always interesting and fresh.”
Saulter whose first big commercial success was the 2011 ‘Betta Muss Come’, shared that filming in Jamaica is very good but certain things need to be in place for it to be great.“The hard thing is production likes to go to places with tax incentives but we do not have tax incentives here. Investors would be more excited if we did. It would help us home grown film makers as we would make more films for an international audience where Jamaicans can love it and appreciate it so we need to create the best environment for the investors’ sense of security. Government entities have become more aware of and supportive of our efforts so it is moving in the right direction but it needs to move faster.”
When not working his craft, Storm who is a nature lover, can be found near the ocean or up in the mountain. “I like art so when I travel I like to immerse myself in art from physical art to music so that’s how I relax.” Any advice to young people aspiring to make their own great film masterpiece? “Join JAFTA; come meet the members of the film industry and submit your scripts to PROPELLA. Find your way and be plugged in. If you take one step towards something, it will take two 2 steps towards you. Also finish what you start. Learn how to complete ideas whether it be a short film etc.
