Doctor: the word easily conjures up images of MDs attending to patients, reading charts and quickly administering lifesaving treatments during an emergency. If Dr. Karla Hylton’s Father, Wilfred Daniels had his way, his daughter would have left college with a medical degree and set up her own private practice. But, it was simply not meant to be.

Though her intention was to pursue a career in medicine, Karla found herself gravitating toward zoology, botany and research. At just 25, she boasted a PhD in bio technology and by 1999, she landed a full-time lecturing post
at the University of Technology. Nowadays, this scientist come educator, privately tutors high school students in chemistry and biology from her stunning, family home in suburban St. Andrew.

The residential enclave that is Millsborough offers a great escape from Kingston’s frenzied bustle, while still maintaining close proximity to restaurants, shops and banking facilities. Here, in this upscale retreat, residents enjoy lush flora, a serene environment and for those lucky to be perched on its sloping highlands, spectacular views of the city.

“We were living in Aylsham for about 14 years but then we had a traumatic incident there, a robbery, and decided to leave as we were concerned about the safety of our children, Mike and Lisanne”, shares Dr Hylton. “My husband, Charlton and I were looking to buy a house but couldn’t find anything that would please me. We eventually discovered this place in Millsborough and intended to remodel but it just wasn’t working, so we chose to demolish the structure and start from scratch”, she reveals.

Inspired by a contemporary aesthetic, Karla’s penchant for clean lines and disdain for clutter is echoed in her décor choices throughout the residence. The exquisite abode, which covers approximately 12,000 square feet, lofty 18 foot high ceilings, subdued wall colours and striking furniture pieces. A self-proclaimed bargain hunter, Karla scoured the pages of various interior design magazines, searched several modern furnishing websites and visited a number of local home improvement stores to pull together the chic look she envisioned for her home. Despite never being formally trained as an interior designer, Karla undoubtedly has a natural knack for décor, having done an amazing job designing her house and helping others with their decorating projects.
