A At first glance, he does not appear to be your typical buttoned up, black coat wearing, conservative attorney, but then appearance can be deceiving. This legal eagle may not look like the poster boy for the highly respected law profession, but do not for a second sleep on him or worse, be dismissive of his abilities. Indeed, Lance Lamey is a man on a mission to transform how society tries to pigeon hole individuals based on their physical appearance and also how the average Jamaican citizen has access to and can better utilise basic legal services.
The assumption off the bat, is that he looks like a reggae artiste about to hit the stage to entertain a crowd. Apparently, he gets that a lot due to his flowing locks, but this dark-skinned ‘rastaman’ holds your attention not on a stage but in court where he proudly represents the little man who otherwise may not have access to the law. BUZZZ Magazine caught up with Lamey who is now a partner at the prestigious Bignall Law firm to find out about his new position in a firm in where incidentally, he was the first employee hired right out the gate.
Interestingly, Lamey is just three years out of law school having graduated in 2019, but he holds law degrees from both the University of Technology as well as The University of the West Indies and make no mistake, he has been interacting with the law for well over twenty years.
Now an accomplished fifty something year old, who in his former career was both an accountant and a computer programmer, Lamey utilises these much needed skill sets in his practice.
This makes him a well rounded professional who has already set up his own intricate software to track cases in a manner that makes bulky old case files cluttering up an office or gathering dust in old cabinets, a thing of the past. So why law? “Growing up I never knew that law was a possibility but I knew university and education were a must. I went to university and initially did management with a minor in International relations. When I was there, the management faculty was beside the law faculty and I realised regular people went over there.”
After interacting with the law he realised he liked it. Early along the legal journey, he met Vaughn Bignall and that friendship blossomed over the years and these two like-minded individuals would bond over the mutual interests that they shared. It, however, would be years before he actively pursued his passion for the law as Lamey’s early life steered him in another direction.
