MARTIAL ARTS: A Great Addition to a Child’s Summer Fun

“Children are the future, it is our responsibility to mould and encourage them in any way that we can.“

C hildren are the future, it is our responsibility to mould and encourage them in any way that we can. With that being said it would be wise to make use of those crucial years between 5 years old and 13 years old, as they are packed full of energy and the ability to learn and retain knowledge is at its peak. Many parents face every summer wondering what can be done to help my child before school restarts? Why not give martial arts a try? I grew up with the need to have structure in my fitness and personal development and martial arts was able to offer me that fulfilment first in karate then kickboxing and now as an adult Taekwon Do Instructor. It helped burn extra energy, have more restful sleep, taught me how to anticipate potential dangerous situations and how to think quickly. As it relates to fitness, martial arts can provide regular cardio session in the form of fun activities that activate muscle groups that may not be used very often. Exercises such as hopping like a frog will activate quad muscles in legs, hip flexors, calves and foot spring; Crawling with the forearm and knees develops coordination, activating the core (torso), arm and shoulder muscle groups. By punching and kicking bags and paddles a child learns to connect coordination of eye on the target and landing the blow to that expected target. Martial Arts can provide an avenue for those children with low self-esteem to know they are strong and powerful as well as help children with anger issues find a safer way of relieving their frustrations in a controlled environment.

I encourage any parent or guardian to sign their child up to a martial art. I’m sure they will flourish in this encouraging environment especially with the support of a loving family member.
