Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce : Bouncing Back After Childbirth

Like most mothers-to-be, champion sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser Pryce worried about getting back into shape after her baby was born. Stunningly, just six months after giving birth to
her son Zyon, Shelly-Ann is well on her way back to full fitness. Her winning advice is to breast feed, drink lots of water, and eat well before and after the baby and to do light exercise.

A late January visit to her MVP Track Club training base at the University of Technology found her glowing and willing to share her programme to regain that pre-pregnancy physical condition. Shelly-Ann explained that Zyon was delivered via a C-section and that slowed her return to abdominal exercises. “So I had lots of super stress about that but honestly what I actually did … breastfeeding”, she confided. “I’m still breast feeding my son exclusively so that’s the only thing I do and I find that breastfeeding also helps you to take down the belly”, she advised.

More specifically, she recommended this method over the use of formula even for those who find it hard to produce milk. “But try, make sure you try 6 months exclusively”, she exorted. “Breast feeding shrinks the uterus and gets it back down”, said the 2008 and 2012 Olympic 100 metre champion. “Also I drank a lot of water”, she continued. “So for the first 3 months, water, water, water”, she emphasised, “I would consume water like it’s nobody’s business.”

She rolled right into the next step of her get-the-body-back programme like it was a World Championship 100 metre final. “Throughout my pregnancy, I wasn’t binge eating and doing all those crazy kind of eating”, she said. The details of how she eats are revealing. “When I say ‘eat well’, I didn’t starve myself or anything and this no fat, no sugar’, no, I ate”, she outlined, “but not a lot of food and I didn’t have any cravings like waking up in the middle of the night eating anything or any of that but I drank a lot of water and I had patience.”

Her husband Jason is an excellent cook and manages her diet. “That has definitely helped me because he’s one of those persons, like he wants to see me do well and he’s in my corner 100%”, she smiled. Her beloved pork, white rice and white dumplings are held to a minimum. Instead, Jason prepares yam, banana, and ‘a lot of soup with gungoo peas and corn, ockro and all that stuff’. With a laugh, she surmised that Jason feeds her well to ensure that Zyon gets the best breast milk possible.
