I love that song! In fact, it is usually one of the songs on my summer soundtrack. Unfortunately, no tunes for 2020’s summer. This year has brought about a difference in how we do many things including enjoying summertime. It is safe to say this summer is a different type of summer! Around this time, my family and I would discuss hotel bargains, beach trips, family visits and picnics. We would be hand-picking swimwear, casual wear, sunscreen, travel bags, extra towels and other summer paraphernalia.
This year though, we are handpicking, hand-sanitizer, bottles of rubbing alcohol, masks, hand soap and disinfectant. You would think we are planning a summer of vacationing at the hospital, but it’s actually preparing for a summer staying home.
This pandemic (COVID-19) is no joke. Never in my wildest dreams, would I have thought I would have been afraid of the beach or going to the cinema. Come to think of it, I could not have imagined that a disease could put the entire world on lockdown. But, why dwell on the negatives? I rather have the mindset – when life gives you lemons, make lemonade…that’s my approach this summer. Since I have been served lemons; a pandemic which resulted in lockdown, I will make lemonade; find alternate ways for me and the family to have a great summer.
It’s hard brainstorming fun because it should just flow in the moment, but I will give it a try. I have to be creative, innovative, and all-inclusive – so that everyone in the house, my wife, kids and parents can enjoy.
A home picnic came to mind. Spread a few blankets on the front lawn, or what’s left of it following the drought seems like a great idea. I mean we often visit Hope Gardens to picnic on their lawn, so why can’t this year’s picnic be on our own? The only thing needed now is some drinks, snacks, sandwiches, hot dogs and a couple of balls to play with. Once we have that, the scene is now set for us to enjoy food and laughter with each other.
