The skin is our body’s largest organ. It has many important functions to keep the body in its optimum state. One such function is to protect our bodies from the harmful effects of the sun and radiation. It also helps to prevent the loss of essential body fluids and the penetration of toxic substances.
No! It’s most important function is not as an aesthetic decoration but with proper care, we can definitely benefit from this perk. If the eyes are the windows to the soul, it follows that the skin is the
window to our body and emotions. It’s our alert system about our health. It clues us into whether we are dehydrated, stressed, not getting enough sleep and some medical conditions.
Here are some no-nonsense tips to pamper your skin from the inside and out.
Eat a healthy diet. Eating a balanced diet of fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean proteins will help you to not only look good but feel better. Research suggests that a diet rich in fish oils or fish oil supplements and low in fats and processed carbohydrates might promote younger looking skin. Drinking 6 – 8 glasses of water daily is essential to keep your skin hydrated.
Building a daily skin care routine: It is a good practice to build a daily skin care routine to maintain overall skin health and improve skin concerns such as acne, flaky skin, excessive whiteheads and dark spots. See the chronological steps below which can be used as a guide in building your personalised skincare routine.
Cleansing: Choose a mild cleanser that doesn’t leave your skin feeling tight after washing. For persons who wear makeup, search for a cleanser that specifically states that it removes makeup. Your skin should be cleaned twice a day if you have Dry skin limit to cleansing once a day or consider using an oil cleanser (there are many on the market now).
Serums: If you have no earthly idea what they are and sound like a magic potion, they basically are. As a makeup artist, I use them in my bag of tricks. It is made up of smaller molecules that can penetrate deeply into the skin to deliver beneficial properties for faster results. They are super concentrated and more potent so they tend to be on the pricier end of the skincare spectrum. Persons with acne-prone skin can look for serums with zinc and niacinamide or salicylic acid. For Drier skin types look for formulas with hyaluronic acid that works by attracting moisture to the skin while ageing, dull or combination skin will benefit from formulas with both retinoids and /or vitamin C. Note that products containing retinoids, should only be applied at night. Serums should be applied before your moisturiser.
