Since 2005, the Afro Punk Festival has been a celebration of African-American excellence in music and culture, redefining the modern multicultural experience globally. With the mission of unleashing the freedom of expression and honouring the power of individuality while strengthening the communities, the event has hosted acts that other, more mainstream festivals perhaps would not consider. In a world of glitz and pizzazz, Afro Punk has served as a platform for the cultivation of urban culture inspired by alternative and experimental music.
It is not about conventionality or about fitting in the mold but about fabulously standing out. The festival is the playground for out-of-the-box styles, DIY-ers and anyone trying to make a fashion statement. What the event continues to attract are bucking trends and rules, outfits spewing with colour and proportion with a collision of detailing and prints. At the heart of the appearance of the patrons, is the energy and confidence with which they wear their outfits, demonstrating such a sense of self.
This years’ event made stops in Paris, London, Atlanta, New York and Johannesburg, with Jamaica’s very own original grapefruit drink, Ting, being a major part of the mix. Ting joined the distinguished sponsors to cool down the patrons with its mocktails and cocktails infusing a taste of Jamaica and Jamaicaness at each event staging. A tiki hut bar was erected at each event for patrons to unwind while participating in truly Jamaican past times like dominoes and ludu.
“Each patron joins others creatively dressed to impress, using pops of colour or statement pieces to make an impression. With our unique fashion sense, creative energy and use of bold colours, Jamaicans fit right into the mix at Afro Punk while Ting added the perfect refreshment for the occasion,” Carla Hollingsworth Export Marketing Manager at Pepsi said.
