There is nothing like stepping into the summer season in a couture garment that screams you – a piece that is tailored to fit your body type and personality, a style that turns heads.
Saints International Style Week 2017 was all the better for having Rick Bailey Designs grace its runways. A Jamaican living in the fashion city, New York, Rick comes to Jamaica with his take on the trends of the season. And with his e-commerce website launching soon, his specialised blazer and cufflink line that stirred everyone at the Show, will be available for the world to experience craftsmanship and high quality.
“As a designer, I will go into a store and the fabric just holds me, screams at me to just use it. That’s where it starts for me, working with the inspiration from the fabric. ”
Buzzz Magazine caught up with Rick Bailey, during the show to learn all about his journey – a journey that started from as early as age 5 when he developed a curiosity for the treadle machine. No, he wasn’t sewing at that age, but he experimented with the machine like a child at that age could.
His passion and flair for fashion was nurtured even more when he worked with his brothers, David and Michael, at their bespoke, Bailey’s Tailoring in Buff Bay Valley, Portland. Rick later moved to Kingston in 1995 to better his craft and expand his experience into making ladies wear and shortly thereafter, Rick B’s Fashion opened its doors from a small location in Princeville Plaza in Kingston.
Exuding originality, sleekness and style, Rick B’s caught the eyes of famous Jamaicans like Papa San, Pinchers, Skatta Burrell, Singing Melody and TV anchor Kerlyn Brown, among others. And with so many local celebrities and personalities wearing his designs, Rick B’s is today, a renowned and respected fashion designer with his pieces being shown among some of the world’s bests.
And with his footprint now expanded to a second location in New York City, Rick has not only been able to grow his client base, but also to distinguish and leverage the differences in the fashion culture between Jamaica and one of the world’s most notable fashion capitals.
Acknowledging that his life has been immensely enriched by mentors, Rick gives much credit to Master Hugh, who has a doctorate in Fashion Designing from London School of Fashion and Polytechnic. Master Hugh took him under his wings and taught him the ins and outs of pattern making, stretched his talent and transformed him from an ordinary tailor to the fashion guru whose signature glitzy gowns have seen him take style and quality to the next level. Speaking about how fabrics now transform his technique for each piece he designs;
“As a designer, I will go into a store and the fabric absolutely captivates me… screaming at me to just use it. That’s where it all starts for me….working with the inspiration from the fabric and knowing silhouettes and proportions to see how the fabric drapes and works best for that design.”
His Spring/Summer collection, “A Cut Above” for men and “Timeless Elegance” for women, showcased at this year’s Style Week, is a concept that he has had for many years.
