A writer once wrote “hats off to the past, coats off to the future”. Equally, it is quite timely to echo the sentiments, hats off for 2015 and coats off for 2016.
A writer once wrote “hats off to the past, coats off to the future”. Equally, it is quite timely to echo the sentiments, hats off for 2015 and coats off for 2016.
We have travelled a circle of time and are now facing a new year dubbed 2016. The past is the past and we salute it. Now we need to think about taking off our coats for a new page. . . a new journey. You stand facing a clean, unspoiled page. What will you do with it? What will it be like at the close of the year? Will it be a new life for you? Will it be business as usual?
As you examine this new page, it would be wise not to mar it with regret. You should not wrap your mistakes and offences of the past around you. They should be forgotten in a determination to think differently and positively.
Let the new 2016 be the beginning of a new life in each of you whereby old thoughts, which could prejudice your progress, are wiped from your hearts and minds.
Around the world, the New Year is celebrated in different ways. In Scotland, groups of friends or families get together for dinner at a host’s house and exchange gifts soon after midnight. In Japan, people dress in new clothes and decorate their houses with bamboo and pine branches, which are symbols of life. In Greece, the children leave shoes by the fireplace, with the hope that St. Basil will fill them with gifts soon after midnight.
A story was once told of a little girl who visited her grandmother and found a cat with four little kittens. “Oh, I wish I had four hands, so I could hold them all at once,” she cried. “You must just choose one to keep, for one will keep your two hands busy,” the grandmother told her.
Every day is a fresh start in spite of old sorrow, pain and distress. Take heart, keep busy and begin again with trust, self-restraint and humility, the kind of enthusiasm, joy and energy which will give you the exciting bounce from day one. Let’s resolve to use the opportunity to practice what we have learnt about life during the last 12 months.
