Christmas in Jamaica has long been best represented by the dazzling light displays on homes and in malls, the endless events and parties for enjoyment, and the family gatherings and dinner parties that fill the stomach as much as the feeling of Christmas fills the air. The last year however, saw an unfortunate stop to some of our favourite holiday pass times as a result of the global pandemic and the safety measures and protocols imposed by the Government to reduce the spread of COVID-19. With the second holiday season since the pandemic fast approaching and continued measures which may disrupt traditional happenings looming, Buzzz decided to explore some fun ways the holiday season can still be exciting while remaining indoors with close family and friends.
HAVE A SLEEPOVER
Christmas Eve is traditionally spent roaming the malls with family and friends, finalizing last minute shopping and anticipating the start of Christmas at large scale events. This year however, whether you choose to spend it gathered with friends or reunited with family, one option to ring in the two day Christmas celebration is to have a sleepover. Fun and games, music and libation will serve as the perfect complement to the camaraderie of family and friendship gathered to celebrate togetherness, in spite of any curfews that may be imposed. This can either be done at your home or in a private villa if you desire a more lavish environment. Holiday movie marathons, sleepover activities and sharing your favourite memories and traditions are perfect ways to keep the night intimate and to bring everyone together for Christmas. If you plan on exchanging gifts, you can end your sleep over the next morning with an intimate gift exchange and opening.
CHRISTMAS KARAOKE AND SING-A-LONGS
Arguably one of the best features of the Christmas season is the music. Christmas songs, whether traditional or modern provide the perfect soundtrack to this momentous experience; so let’s make a party out of it. Whether you have the vocals or not, having a fun karaoke or sing-a-long jam session of your favourite holiday songs will definitely add a sense of entertainment and joy to your evening. Make an event out of it, with all the dramatics of props, choreography and costumes and create those Kodak moments for your albums or to share on social media.
EAT IN STYLE
Turn Christmas dinner into a spectacle. Pull out all the stops as if you had gone out to a restaurant or been at an event. Get dressed up, decorate the room and the table and celebrate with the ones you love in fine style. Cook your favourite Christmas dishes and present them in unconventional gourmet presentations. When you put effort into creating your space, you may even forget that you are possibly stuck indoors.
HAVE A VIRTUAL PARTY
In case you are not able to gather with the ones you love or you are stuck at home unable to get to your preferred destination, the party can still continue. Jump on a meeting platform and connect with your loved ones online. Have as many people join the call and use the opportunity to play games, share stories and express gratitude for life and its many blessings. You can even have a virtual dance party; pump up the music and show off your best moves. Seclusion doesn’t have to mean exclusion; so let’s stay connected whichever way you can and have a Happy Holidays.
