The months of September and October have much to offer: September 21 marks the official end to the summer season and kids return to school; October holds its own with Cancer Awareness. However, there is much more to the months than many are aware. Buzzz Magazine has put together a list of some commemorative days to look forward to. Get involved as much as you can – it can be more rewarding than you imagine.
International Literacy Day
(September 8)
International Literacy Day was conceptualized by UNESCO to “promote literacy as an instrument to empower individuals, communities and societies”. This year’s theme is ‘Reading the Past, Writing the Future’.
World Suicide Prevention Day
(September 10)
By this time last year, 42 Jamaicans had taken their lives. This year, all are invited to “join with the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) to focus public attention on the unacceptable burden and costs of suicidal behaviours with diverse activities to promote understanding about suicide and highlight effective prevention activities”.
World Tourism Day
(September 27)
According to the United Nations World Tourism Organization, the purpose of World Tourism Day is “to foster awareness among the international community, of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value”. As a country highly dependent on the tourism product, this day sparks much interest. This year’s theme is “Tourism for all – Promoting universal Accessibility” and will focus on the creation of environments to cater for the needs of everyone, regardless of their situation.
World Heart Day
(September 29)
We could definitely benefit from increased awareness and prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Heart disease is surprisingly the number one killer of women. All are encouraged to join in planned events, as we continue the fight against heart disease in Jamaica.
International Coffee Day
(October 1)
Who knew there was such a day? After all, we celebrate coffee every day, right? Now you don’t have to explain your addiction. Go ahead and explore the various ways to enjoy the world’s favourite beverage. Thinking of gift ideas? Maybe a coffee mug to help prepare your loved ones for the special day.
World Food Day
(October 16)
To accelerate its aim of zero hunger, the United Nation’s Food and Agriculture Organization launched World Food Day. Why not find ways to contribute to food security in our country?
National Heroes Day
(October 17)
According to the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), “Heroes day is a holiday celebrated on the 3rd Monday every October. It commemorates seven national heroes from Jamaican History? Who is your favourite national hero and why?
