She was originally told that having children was not in her future, an unfortunate thought that she learnt to accept from early. You can, therefore, imagine her surprise when in 2016; she discovered that she was pregnant. From utter disbelief and amazement to sheer joy and apprehension, she felt the full gamut of emotions and in April 2017, she held that tiny bundle in her arms and she became a mother.
“We all make mistakes and its ok, it doesn’t make you a bad mother, it makes you a real one. Yes, you have to nurture the child but also nurture yourself because a happy mother produces a happy child.”
For media personality and TV host Debbie Bissoon, this was her introduction into the wonderful world of motherhood. A world full of diaper changes, 3 am feedings, lack of sleep as well as playing dress up, cooing and the look that melts your heart the first time they recognise the sound of your voice and respond with a megawatt toothless smile. Debbie recently shared with BUZZZ Magazine her thoughts and experiences on being a new mom, amazing ‘mommy moments’ as well as her desire to publish a book on her maternal journey thus far.
On April 20, 2017, Josiah Fyre Watkis came roaring into the world and life as Debbie knew it would never be the same. As the mother of a healthy, bouncing baby boy, she instantly began to rethink her life goals and her future as now; she had to plan not only for herself but this new human being that she has responsibility for.
“Can you believe I have a pickney”? I mean a child actually came outta me! It was an overwhelmingly awesome experience. I was told that I couldn’t have children because of a medical condition so I did five pregnancy tests before I started believing it and then went to my gynae for confirmation. I think that was the biggest change for me, planning not only for my future but his as well.”
Despite her apprehension and after getting over her initial shock, Debbie was able to thoroughly immerse herself in her pregnancy.
“I had a smooth pregnancy except for the end. He came early and was breached so I had a C-section. That was the only hiccup. Within days I was back on my feet and doing it all. After delivery, I actually went back to my original high school weight as my diet had been so healthy.”
Striking that balance between work and mommy duties is a challenge but luckily she has a lot of family support. “Every mother needs to find support as that support is critical because pregnancy and childbirth can be a very emotional period. I have Josiah’s nanny who is a child whisperer and trust me she is phenomenal. I also remember my sister coming from Clarendon after Josiah was born and she was a Godsend, especially in the nights when we took shifts to feed him and stay up. When he got older, another family member would take him so that his father and I could go on the road or go to the movie or just have a chance to breathe. You need that support.”
