All vaginas were not created equal. Now that you have gotten over that shock, there are many things that you can and probably should do to ensure that your lady part is lovely, lush, luxurious and properly maintained.
This is your gynaecological goals 101 where we will explore often thought of, yet seldom asked questions with obstetrician/ gynaecologist Dr Charles Rockhead, who keeps it real right from the get-go as he insists, too few women have a basic understanding of how their vagina woks and what is good for “down there”.
Keeping your vagina clean
When it comes to the basic do’s and don’ts, cleaning is super important and according to Dr Rockhead, all you actually need is a clean rag and water. What you do not need on that sensitive area is soap, douche and panty shield. Yes, you heard right, panty shield!
Panty shields and liners he stressed are generally chemically bleached so it affects the ph balance of the vagina. Also, avoid scented or coloured toilet paper. The dyes and perfume will also throw off your ph. balance and possibly cause irritation and issues. By the way, when it comes to having a discharge this should normally be slightly white with no odour.
“The vagina has a particular bacteria called the lactobacillus, and it acts on sugar in the vagina to create an acidic ph which is protective to prevent other pathogens from entering the vagina, so anything that compromises this is counterproductive. Most soaps which are anti-bacterial kills the lactobacillus, so you are setting yourself up for problems,” says Dr Charles Rockhead.
