The kitchen is arguably the most used room in your home. One of the best parts about home cooking is getting to use cool gadgets and utensils in preparing and serving up our favourite meals for family and friends. This Christmas is by no means different and no doubt you will need lots of help to make your workload lighter. So… spoil yourself and your kitchen with these must have kitchen utensils.
Spatula: Great for all things Breakfast and also for sautéing vegetables, it’s an all- purpose utensil that flips everything with aplomb.
Colander: Picture trying to drain a dish of its water while keeping your food intact and out of the sink. Somehow, it just doesn’t work out. I remember my mom trying to get rid of water from her boiled ackees: pot cover half way open, dish towel spread across and pour. It was an epic fail. Lesson? Buy a colander!
Tongs: There are three basic movements you do in the kitchen: stirring, pouring and grabbing things. You cannot grab things without a pair of kitchen tongs. It is incredibly important to have a decent pair of grabbers for almost every situation.
Whisk: This falls into the aforementioned stirring/mixing category. Sometimes a spoon doesn’t do the job as well as you would like, as the lumps are still in the mixture; so here comes the whisk, perfect for everything from eggs to batters to … Why do you need another example?
Cutting board: Contrary to popular belief, you don’t need five different types of cutting boards of all sizes for your cutting needs. All you need is a big and sturdy one to do the job. Cutting bread, vegetables- you name it. No more cutting or scratching of your counter top. Be sure to sanitise between each use.
Food Processor: Excellent for chopping things quickly, blending ingredients for a sauce and many other things, the food processor will save on a lot of time and hassle. More versatile than a blender, this tool is a must on your list of gadgets.
Wooden Spoon: Have you ever read a recipe that calls for stirring with a wooden spoon and wondered why? I guess there are many reasons we can explore: they are easy to handle, will not burn your hands, are better on non- stick pots, won’t react to acids like some metal spoons, among many other things. It is simple- a wooden spoon is a must have.
