When one thinks of a Man of the World, it is hard not to look at James Bond as the epitome of the Heineken tagline. For Maurice Smith, LLB, the 007 persona is not only an exemplar, but a way of being.
Smith, who is a practising lawyer, epitomises gentlemanly rapport in his everyday life. Like 007, he understands the importance of small niceties like opening a door for a lady or never unbuttoning a double-breasted jacket.
“When I got the call about the Man of The World, the first thing I thought about was Daniel Craig drinking a Heineken against a bar…”
Becoming a Man of the World
Hailing from the sleepy little town of Mandeville, Smith grew up with big dreams. Becoming a lawyer and inheriting his father’s law practice was a major milestone for the 27-year-old. “There’s a notion that being more experienced in the field of law, you’re going to automatically walk over younger practitioners and one has to go against the grain of that thinking.”
As one of the youngest practitioners to run a firm, Smith sets new milestones to achieve for his practice each year. “I set a lot of targets for myself in terms of completing my matters and revenue for the year,” said Smith.
However, not all of Smith’s goals are work-related. “I enjoy adding a different personal challenge to my agenda each year,” said Smith. Some of his accomplishments include becoming a private air pilot, visiting eight countries in one year and becoming a great chef. “I do a lot of work between the hours of 6 pm and 3 am in the week and that gives me some time on the weekend,” said Smith when asked how he makes time with his busy schedule.
Role Models of Gentlemanly Behaviour
“When I got the call about the Man of The World, the first thing I thought about was Daniel Craig drinking a Heineken against a bar,” said Smith. “James Bond is one of my absolute heroes; though he doesn’t have any super powers.”
