Kamal Powell: A Classic Man

Kamal Powell: A Classic Man

Its Carnival time in Trinidad.

Imagine all the music, the colour, the vibe, the “beautiful people” (well, really the ladies, truth be told). An annual excursion for many, but for some, and a lucky few in particular, a once-in-a lifetime experience, courtesy of the Campari Carnival promotion, which took patrons to witness “The greatest show on earth” up close and personal. Though he’s not immune to the cultural smorgasbord that was Carnival T & T (“it was phenomenal” he sums up), it’s kind of all in a day’s work for J. Wray & Nephew Limited Regional Marketing Manager (Caribbean) Kamal Powell,
a responsibility that takes him from Trinidad in the south to the Bahamas in the North, inclusive of Barbados, Cayman, St Lucia and of course “home base” Jamaica. His present brand portfolio includes Campari, Magnum and Skyy vodka.

No newbie to Management and Marketing, a former Senior Sponsorship and Development Manager at Digicel, Kamal maintains that his love for Marketing rescued him from pursuing a career in accounting.

He’s still in his early 30s, but already a “veteran” In the high stakes game of repping big, indeed globally recognised and admired brands. So what was the lure?

This opportunity represented a new challenge for me,” he outlines. “To work with a brand that is not only global and well established but one which is on
a growth curve, particularly in this region, and I wanted to be a part of that growth.”

As alluded to in the opening, music and cultural expressions are a key element in that development process. In addition to the Campari campaign, Powell and the team have tapped into popular
music in highlighting the virtues of the Magnum tonic wine brand which, along with its huge grassroots following (courtesy of the Magnum Xplosion Stage Show Series and trade marketing
activities) is increasingly becoming a fixture across the Caribbean. “We’re seeing greater acceptance of the brands across our varied markets; it’s a very robust, dynamic and varied space, and we’re
going to be consistent in finding exciting ways to incorporate those values into the experience.”

In terms of his own experience, Powell, a born leader, from head boy to house captain, hall committee leadership, graduating with honours, Youth Ambassador to Jamaica, Chairman of the commonwealth and presenting to 32 heads of Government on youth issues- is preparing to add a bit of variety also. He’s gearing up for an assignment that’s set to extend his reach even beyond the Anglo-Caribbean. Come October, he’ll be heading over to the land of the Gauchos, Argentina, as Chef de Mission of the Jamaican delegation to the 2018 Youth Olympic Games in Buenos Aires. He’s the youngest ever Chef de Mission to any Jamaican competitive team, but Powell – an avid track and field fan, but never a competitive athlete – feels no pressure. “It’s a tremendous opportunity to represent my country and create new linkages“.
