Hygiene and comfort are of utmost importance during and after childbirth. Good hygiene must be followed to avoid bacteria that can develop due to blood, warmth and moisture conditions that will exist. During the first stage of labour, maternity pads should be worn without an underwear before going to the delivery room. At this stage do not peel off the sticky strip; it is comfortable to wear the pad with the strip in place.
In the first few hours/days post-delivery, bleeding will be heavier than usual and it will become necessary to wear two maternity (2) pads affixed end to end for extra length. Peel off the sticky strip to about one third way of the length of one pad then add the other pad to area of pad where strip is removed to create an extra-long pad. Do not peel off the sticky strips completely until you get to bed and are able to put on your underwear. The sticky strip will now hold the pad securely in place to the underwear.
Immediately after child birth, pads should be changed every one or two hours when possible to every three to four hours. The reason you need so many pads is that bleeding (lochia) from your uterus/womb will start soon after your baby is born. As time progresses you should revert to using a regular maxi pad and or liner where necessary.
Pay attention to the progression of your postpartum bleeding and alert your doctor if unusual changes occur. In preparing for the big day, we recommend that you pack your labour bag at least 1 month before your due date. Below is a list of the essentials of what to have ready before going to the hospital:
