We live in a day and age where the colour of our skin, the clothes we wear and our mannerisms form the basis of the impressions people make of us; and you know what they say, first impressions last. So how mindful must we be of our appearance in order to create the right impressions; and does our image really reveal more about us than we are aware? These perceptions even transcend our own persona to those we associate with; owing to phrases like “show me your friends and I’ll tell you who you are”.
So the question is, what does your image say about you? Whether we would like to believe it or not, we all form impressions of persons at the initial glance. They say never judge a book by its cover, however appearances do reveal quite a bit about the individual in question. So let’s explore what is revealed by what we portray.
There are four distinct things shared by our image: our level of confidence, energy and personality, creativity and to some extent our degree of rigidness.
Confidence – Our image reveals a lot about our level of confidence, through our deportment (how we put ourselves together), mannerisms, posture and movements and even in our facial expressions. Persons may be able to look at us and determine our level of fearlessness or self-doubt. Our confidence is intrinsically linked to our physical image. Slight changes in aspects of our physical appearance can drastically improve our confidence and increase our energy, which becomes easily recognisable by onlookers. If you were to take a look into the mirror, who would you see? Someone ready to take on the world or someone comfortable watching life pass them by? Chances are, the same image you see is the same impression people have made on how confident you are.
Personality – Our image speaks volumes about our personality type. By looking at our interactions with people and how we carry ourselves, there is an impression formed as to whether or not we are introverts or extroverts. This type of observation allows many persons to decide which energies their own personalities would connect with and which energies they would be better off avoiding. Our personality is displayed predominantly through the type of clothes we wear, the way we speak and how we carry ourselves.
Creativity – Our choice of clothing and grooming habits are distinct representations of our creativity and style. Observing a person’s choice of clothing reveals whether their style is simple and classic, trendy and modern or dynamic and unorthodox. This form of personal branding allows persons to explore a variety of options in showcasing their own level of imagination and innovation in how they group garments or colours. Persons who are creative and stylish in their appearance often tend to be more artistic persons with a very diverse set of creative skillsets.
