As you read this article you may be asking yourself – Why is breakfast so important? Why should I spend time and money that I don’t have to prepare and eat breakfast every day? The simple answer- it is – for your good health, weight management and optimum performance throughout your day.
Breakfast literally means ‘breaking the fast’. Typically you fast for up to 12 hours nightly; from the time of your evening meal to breakfast the following day and, during that time, your blood glucose levels tend to fall making you irritable and lethargic. Sounds familiar? It will also make you feel hungrier motivating you to snack on unhealthy foods.
In addition, you may also tend to overeat on your next meal which may give rise to obesity and other non-communicable diseases. Eating breakfast will improve your focus, concentration and brain power. After fasting through the night, breakfast can provide the essential nutrients and vitamins needed to fuel your brain and your body helping you to be more alert mentally and physically.
Remember, breakfast doesn’t have to be time consuming. You can whip up a balanced breakfast in minutes consisting of proteins (like a boiled egg or non-fat yogurt), Whole grains (like Nestlé Cheerios Cereal), fruits / veggies and a healthy fat (like chopped nuts). If you struggle to make a healthy breakfast given your time constraints; here are a few tips:
• Wake up 15 minutes early so that you have
sufficient time to prepare & have breakfast.
• Keep it simple; some nutritious and quick
options are – eggs, bread, breakfast cereal
and fruits.
