Frequent headaches, bad breath, weight gain, low energy and infertility are just a few signs leading many to believe they need to detoxify their bodies. But what exactly is a detox? Is it really as beneficial as it is promoted to be? If so, what are those benefits? Is it for everybody? Are there side effects? And, how often should one detoxify?
We are all given one body in this lifetime, so Buzzz Magazine has the answers to help you keep your temple in tip-top shape.
Detox Explained
The human body has natural systems in place to rid itself of impurities and maintain optimal health. However, due to environmental factors and lifestyle choices, the body can undergo a waste overload. When this happens, the natural cleansing systems don’t work as they should and we may feel or get sick. Admittedly, some escape the symptoms of a malfunctioning body, but this does not mean all is well.
Detoxification is encouraged in alternative medicine as a means to boost the body’s performance.
A detox clears the body of toxins or poisonous substances that undermine one’s overall health. This takes much load off the organs and systems responsible for cleaning the body. So what are the detox options?
Detoxing can be done in various ways. Some popular methods include:
COLON IRRIGATION
Rather invasive, this is where the patient lies on a bed or table and a small tube is inserted into the rectum by a therapist who flushes gallons of water into the body using a low-pressure pump.
The water is then released like a regular bowel movement. The process may be repeated as the therapist sees fit. Some persons may even require several visits.
ENEMA FLUSHES
This is similar to colon irrigation. However, anyone can do this at home by themselves, eliminating the embarrassment some experience using a therapist. An enema bag is filled with a mixture (coffee, cerasee, garlic, salt water and so on). The tube from the bag is inserted into the rectum and the water released. The tummy then becomes bloated and causes an inevitable bowel movement.
SMOOTHIE AND GREEN JUICE CLEANSE
Various recipes are floating around in cyberspace with tasty and nutritious blends. These work best as meal replacement and many have lauded the practice as a quick way to shed excess weight.
LIVER (GALLSTONES) CLEANSE Olive oil and grapefruit/lemon juice are combined as a mixture that is ingested at bedtime (about 9PM); a fast should commence at least 3 hours before. It is recommended that you lie on your right side throughout the night.
The mixture is not easy for many to swallow. However, the benefits will be amazing.
LYMPHATIC CLEANSE
These flushes are beneficial to a cellular level. Only a beverage of water, salts and citrus fruits (particularly Caribbean grapefruit) is ingested throughout the course of a day. It is best to be home for this one, as frequent urination and bowel disturbances are common. Towards the evening, a light meal like soup can break your fast.
IONIC FOOT DETOX The patient’s feet are immersed into a foot bath where a metal unit is placed to generate a gentle electric current. A machine does all the work while you relax. Eventually, the water changes colour based on one’s toxicity. At the end, what was clear could become muddy brown.
