As charming as she is beautiful and intelligent, Gina Hargitay is certainly a beacon of hope to Jamaican youth and for the island’s future.Her eventful, journey since being crowned Miss Jamaica World in July 2013 and her subsequent top-10 finish at the Miss World just over a month later have been nothing short of awe-inspiring.

French chemist, Louis Pasteur famously quoted “… chance favours only the prepared mind,” – Hargitay is perpetually in ‘preparation mode’; so when in November 2013 a public-speaking opportunity was offered to her, she rose to the
occasion kick-starting a wonderful journey becoming a public speaking motivating the future generation.

Hargitay was invited to address a CONCACAF summit in the Cayman Islands on the impact of grassroots football programmes have on the lives of underprivileged youth. Following that stirring presentation an avalanche of public speaking and public service opportunities came her way.

“At that CONCACAF summit I met my ‘patron’ from the United Nations who was quite impressed with what I had to say. He thought it would be good for me to get involved in the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, UNAIDS,” Hargitay shared with Buzzz during a candid interview at her home.

She was formally appointed as an UN Youth Envoy for Jamaica in 2014. The official appointment, however, came just after the execution of her first assignment for the UN, where Hargitay delivered one of the opening speeches at the 4th Pan African/UN Youth Leadership Summit in Dakar, Senegal, January 13-17th 2014. Her thought-provoking speech was on: Youth Unemployment and African Solidarity in Africa and the Diaspora.

The then 18-year-old was invited to present at various other events in the region, while attending various charities duties, which came as a part of the mandate of wearing the MJW 2013 crown. Addressed issues included child welfare in various spheres – physical/mental health, safety/security, rights and opportunities for the disabled.
