“What makes a woman beautiful?” According to Maya Angelou’s ‘Phenomenal Woman’, it transcends her physical beauty and comes from the core of who she is.
Bombarded with images in the media of models playing the role of mute and unthinking ‘arm candy’ has subconsciously led us to this erroneous conclusion against our better judgment. Many have argued that beauty is less a physical trait and more a personal trait; beauty is how a woman interacts with her environment to its betterment. We could therefore classify everyday acts performed by women as palpable acts of beauty such as, should she deign to do so, procreation, her commitment to nurturing, the ability to remain loyal to her family, and her resiliency in the face of obstacles.Again I ask, “What makes a woman beautiful?” According to Maya Angelou’s ‘Phenomenal Woman’, it transcends her physical beauty and comes from the core of who she is. The core should not be ‘wishy-washy’, but reinforced with confidence, laced with sass, and blazing hot with the fire of the knowledge that a woman is inextricably connected to the cycle of life, is the embodiment of love and sacrifice and is the foundation upon which civilisation rests.
For the women out there who are still unsure about how beautiful they are, step back and look at your impact. You may “not be cute or built to suit model size… (but) the sun of (your) smile… the grace of (your) style… the need for (your) care” makes you a phenomenal woman; true beauty defined!
