Harvard Scientists are on the cusp of finding a cure for type 1 Diabetes with the aid of stem cell technology.
The team lead, Proffessor Doug Melton, has been able to transform embryonic stem cells into functional cells that can produce insulin for several months, but there still lies the problem of a person’s immune system possibly attacking these foreign cells.
The next step to making this medical breakthrough viable is to find away to mask the stem cells as non foreign cells, so that a person’s immune system will not attack and destroy it, and that is precisely what the Harvard team is working towards to help those patients ailing from the disease.
