The idea of being restrained with no control of the circumstances can be very scary, especially in a sexual situation, whereas for some the very thought is exciting and arousing. By any token, handing over complete control to someone you trust, for the purpose of pleasure, is exactly what the doctor ordered.

The practice of BDSM, (bondage, domination, and sado-masochism) dates far back in annals of history, but was usually associated with deviants and societal misfits.

Fast forward to the 21st century, where the meteoric rise of erotic art and literature, have catapulted bondage into mainstream society, intriguing even the most conservative among us. From lonely housewives, to wealthy CEOs and I dare say, clergy folk, many yearn to be enraptured by the pain, pleasure and delicious fun of bondage and yes, it can be fun, terribly fulfilling and beneficial for a waning sex life of consenting adults in a relationship.

It is also a very dangerous practice and persons have died during the foray, so there are steps that must be taken to minimize risk.

Now contrary to what most persons may believe, the submissive or sub (person who assumes the subordinate position), is actually the one in control of the session, because the minute he/she becomes uncomfortable or is in danger, everything must stop.  The dominant or dom (person who assumes the superior position), is responsible for the safety and pleasure of the sub and most always act in their best interest.
