“An anchor for the family, the one that makes everyone in the home feel safe and secure”, is the response when I asked a friend what a father’s role is and how he shows his love. I was stunned! To sum up a father’s role in its entirety with just one sentence is quite amazing.
The concept of a real father, and how to demonstrate fatherly love is something I often pondered over before I became a father, and now that I am, I ponder about it even more. For some reason, I always feel like I am coming up short. At times, it feels like I am not ready or qualified for the role, but what becomes apparent is that there is no one method to display love as a father. It takes on an extensive and diverse range.
“Be levelheaded”. I must hold it together and captain my ship. Be a calming source to my family, especially during rough times, during the days when challenges abound, and uncertainties are aplenty. Hold my nerve, give everyone a reassuring hug and tell them that we will be alright. This makes my family feel secure and shows that daddy is always here for them.
“Lead the family decisions”. I am the head of the family. This I should always remember hence; I do not leave wifey under the pressure of navigating the waters by herself. In fact, I should lead in navigating the waters, take time out to ponder over what my family needs, guide and protect them by making decisions out of love that will benefit them.
“Be a teammate”. Don’t leave wifey by herself with the responsibility of nurturing our children, grooming them, teaching them and at the same time, preparing meals, doing laundry and keeping the house clean. No, I should step up and give a helping hand, support her and show her I have our family’s best interest at heart. Tell her to relax sometimes, allow her to take a nap or go out and get some time to.
