Throwback: Demystifying Jamaican Fathers

cover story image

It’s fair to say that Jamaican fathers have always played second fiddle to their female counterparts jostling for prominence in their role as fathers. However, this parental gender imbalance is not indigenous to men from Jamaica but, men worldwide who are fathers.

If in doubt, just look at the marketing commercial ads and tally up the revenue spent on Mother’s Day compared to Father’s Day every year. Overall, Mother’s Day takes the cake – worldwide it is the largest card-sending holiday annually, most popular day to dine out in the calendar year and more flowers are purchased and sent on Mother’s Day than any other day of the year.

Jamaican fathers, jamaican men, jamaican fathers day

With uncomplimentary terms like ‘wutliss pupa’ and ‘sperm donor,’ crafted to describe Jamaican fathers and the constant, negative banter telling men to ‘man up’, it seems the labels are hell-bent on sticking. Nevertheless, there are scores of countless, kind, loving, caring, conscience fathers, who go unnoticed and are nothing like the negative, stereotype of a deadbeat dad.

These fathers volunteer to stick around from conception to birth taking their responsibilities towards their offsprings seriously, raising their children step by step.

Additionally, there are also many fathers –knowingly and unknowingly– who end up wearing a ‘jacket’, which never fit but, manage to take it all in stride.

Celebrating papas and sharing inspiring stories, Robyn Miller sat down with three outstanding dads to bring you their stories of triumphs, tears, ingenuity, and yes – fears. Their account testifies their contributions.
