album-review

Music, to the Jamaican people, is as good as medicine; it is a healing to the nation. For over thirty years, Tads Records has released a wide selection of music that caters to the varied taste of music lovers. 2017 will be no different. Whether your choice is gospel or reggae, Tads has something for you.

Gospel artiste Jabez’s current album titled Re-Connect offers the feeling of inspiration we would expect from a gospel track. He identifies with his listeners through songs addressing everyday problems which may lead to depression and despair. Nuh Bruck Again is one such track; it transcends any parameter and is sure to reach not only the Christian but also the ‘unsaved’. On that track, Jabez ministers through music, giving the assurance that with Jesus as his provider he will no longer worry about his finances. Help me through the storm is another uplifting track that promises to be a fan favourite, especially for those who feel dejected. Re-Connect is a good gospel compilation which Jabez’s fans and gospel enthusiasts in general are sure to enjoy.

Dancehall music has always been a competitive genre that encourages entertainers to maintain a good work ethic in order to produce hit songs to ‘run di place’. It is a big boost when any dancehall artiste gets their song rated among the best in any calendar year. 2016 produced several hits that dominated the airwaves. Tads Records have compiled such hits into two albums, The Ultimate 2017(U 17) and Dancehall Kick out. U17 offers a track for every dancehall lover, dancer, and just about anyone who can appreciate the vibe. Marcia Griffiths advocates for marijuana in One Draw, further supported by Aidonia who warned against sharing the drug with certain misfits on No Man to Mi Spliff; while dancehall’s relative newcomer Vershon speaks to his experience with his tune Feeling High.

A little comic relief is offered on the track Frowzy Taximan by Grampa Entatain. This track is sure to have listeners laughing uncontrollably and pressing the replay button as he tackles the issue of hygiene on a PPV. More laughter is expected from Teetimus’ and Tanto Blacks’ Lifestyle Rich.
Arguably, the most popular tracks on the album are Block & Delete and Wha A Gwan by dancehall front-runner Alkaline who led the pack from start to finish last year forcing other artistes to try keeping up with his hit making pace.

Dancehall Kickout is filled with tracks from an alleged King of Dancehall, Vybz Kartel; juxtaposed with the ‘youngest and the baddest’ Alkaline who proved that he could hold his own, even among the greats. Mavado has two featured tracks including Big Bumpa Gal which will surely appeal to our ladies with larger glutes.
