Sean Harris fan, then you know to expect the unexpected when he puts his pen to paper; hence, his latest masterpiece ‘Crossroads’ is a fantastic continuation of some of his most beloved stories, only now many characters’ lives intersect. Irreverent as ever, Harris resurrects some of his most popular characters such as tough as nails Ayana, the queen of the streets and the beautiful Jade who has lived through trials and come out thriving on the other side. Some seek revenge, some reward and still others seek redemption; yet no two characters are remotely the same nor are their motives purely diabolical or on the other hand altruistic, but rather layered as human beings ought to be.
Some like Bumpa made cameo appearances while others like Dunga and Dahlia are interwoven into the fabric of this voluminous tale of treachery, love, obeah, murder and mystery, and of course sex. Do not forget the sex. There is plenty of it to go around, as Ayana finally some; Jade got a man to put a ring on it and one former beauty queen even allowed her lover from the wrong side of the tracks to film their session which almost ruined her entire future, not to mention embarrass her upper class family.
‘Crossroads’ is so thick one can dive into its literary juices with ease and lose themself for days, submerged in sex, drugs and dancehall culture; in baby mamma drama, dysfunctional families, matey war and friends who become ‘frenemies’.
From the streets of Kingston and the sidewalks of London to the warmth of Bogotá and the malls of Manhattan and many places in between, ‘Crossroads’ exposes human nature at both its worst and its finest. It illustrates the huge difference between true self sacrifice and pure selfishness. It details how lust can ruin lives yet forgiveness can heal old wounds and taking personal responsibilities for our own actions can transform us.
