Celebrating a Legend “The Legacy of Bob Marley”

Reggae Ambassador, International Superstar, Global Humanitarian, Jamaican; no matter who you knew him to be, Bob Marley is highly celebrated as one of the most iconic figures in music, a legacy which has transcended the borders of our small island and catapulted not only our infectious reggae music onto the International stage, but the culture and pride of a nation also.

Not only is February celebrated as Reggae Month, Black History Month is internationally recognized during the period. As we reflect, it occurs to me that Cedella Malcolm could hardly have imagined that at the tender age of 18 years, she would give birth to the greatest Reggae Icon to grace this earth. Born 6th February, 1945, Robert Nesta Marley OM would become known to the world as The Legendary, Bob Marley.

In celebration of his 70th Anniversary, activities are well under way to commemorate the life and legacy of this musical maestro; frankly though I believe February 6 should be recognized as a National Holiday. Notwithstanding, there is no shortage of events to celebrate the man.

Telecommunications giants, Digicel Jamaica, launched Bob Marley celebrations on January 12, 2015 at the company’s headquarters in Downtown, Kingston and have announced a full roster of activities; including celebrations at his former home-turned-museum on 6th February 2015 and a free concert at the Waterfront on 7th February, 2015.

The Jamaica Musical Theatre Company has immortalized the legend in their most recent production entitled “Nesta’s Rock”, in conjunction with Tuff Gong International studio, founded in 1965 by Bob Marley. According to the studio’s website, “Bob was affectionately called “The Gong” and “tuff” you had to be to survive in the music business in Jamaica”, hence the studio name, Tuff Gong.

Additionally, there will be the release of music and video material from the Marley Estate as part of his 70th Anniversary Celebrations.
