In his debut as an author, Gospel artiste Kevin Downswell takes his readers on The Journey to understand the inspiration and motivation behind the production of his second album, The Search Continues.
For the readers’ sake, it would be best to dispel what the book is not and then explain what it truly offers. Looking at this book, it would be expected that this book it offers an exposé into the daily Christian walk of the author and, therefore, leave readers with some deeper spiritual truths. However, Downswell notes in the first chapter that this is not his intent, when he says, “I don’t need to go into details about the situations I have been through because I want to emphasise the ‘keeping power’ of Jesus Christ.” And this statement remains true right throughout the book.
In fact, within the same chapter Downswell explains the purpose of writing The Search Continues: The Journey. “I usually tell my young people that God cares more about who we become at the end of a process than the actual reward we receive.” There is no denying that Downswell is a great singer and songwriter, evidenced by the excellent craftsmanship of each song found in the book. But this giftedness is brought so much more to the fore, and is heartfelt, when he shares his testimony of the lessons he learnt while writing each song.
You Make Me Stronger brings us face to face and heart to heart with the man and his message, while allowing us to see the bigger story. Here he says, “It’s a bold declaration that every decision, every contract signed, every deal accepted or rejected, if God is not in it, the answer is no. It’s boldly taking a stand in these compromising days, to not accept anything that does not have the signature of Christ on it.”
