There’s an event that glorifies Dancehall to the point where it is similar to crowning royalty. This event has deeply established its name as a staple for television viewers and is loved by a vast number of Jamaicans. We talk about none other than Magnum Kings and Queens of the Dancehall, the exciting television programme that takes authentic Dancehall gimmicks and stage show theatrics to the homes of millions. The show has sustained itself for seven seasons and is growing and providing greater attractions annually.

This year’s ended with a big splash at the U.D.C Carpark in Downtown Kingston where the Dancehall face-off of Prince and Princesses saw the energetic and charming Krushal and the witty and aggressive Candy K being crowned the 2014 Magnum King and Queen respectively.

It was an explosive event – a star-studded affair with performances from past Magnum winners and breakout artistes, as well as big headliners like Lady Saw, Chris Martin and I-Octane. It was the perfect way to top off what was already an exciting season. Yanique Barrett the curvy Diva, was a saucy and sexy host who kept the vibe going; so did Chique who got viewers to know more about the contestants via the Digicel Endz. As the title sponsor, Magnum felt the need to tap into their niche market and engage the Dancehall loving customers in event that is both entertaining and a sales booster.

An awesome marketing strategy, this enjoyable television show has found a way to present opportunities for talent exposure and financial gain to the less privileged members of society – the ghetto youths. Dancehall, a space for cultural diversity- whether bizarre or not – has truly been a way of life for them and Magnum Kings and Queens facilitates their lives’ development. From the outrageous fashions of contestants and audience, to the shenanigans of the judges: Miss Kitty, Scatta Burrell and Professor Nuts, the competition has been everything! We share highlights from the grand coronation, so get in on the excitement.
