There have been many Jamaican Comedies over the years and the latest offering comes from actress and playwright Dahlia Harris writer and producer of ‘Dat a Gwaan Jamaica’.The five-member cast of Dahlia Harris, Chris McFarlane, Kadeem Wilson, Everaldo Creary and Shanique Brown delivered a performance that had patrons rolling in the aisles and stomping the wooden floors of the Phoenix Theatre as they found the material hilarious and relatable.
The theme song, which is a remixed version of the popular pop-Latin chart-topper ‘Despacito’ was so catchy that patrons sang it from their theatre seats all the way to their vehicles after the curtain call.
It tackled controversial issues ranging from Ishawna’s remark about the Jamaican bandana to skin bleaching, baby father drama, natural hairdo, slim girl versus fluffy, National Identification System (NIDS) and even ‘Religious Hard Talk’, and patrons caught all the puns, innuendos and outright hilarious utterances as punchlines came a mile and minute. The opening overture set the tone for fun and laughter. The exploration of ‘hotline’ shed light on the subject of NIDS and the inability or the challenge of properly identifying individuals as they are victims of skin bleaching. This was side-splitting. Plus-sized females were also under the microscope as ‘Me Love My Fatty’ was another hot topic revealing the “rippling” reasons some Jamaican men love a curvy diva, pun intended.
