Play Review: Romi & Julie

Play Review: Romi & Julie

It’s all about Romi…and Julie and their shenanigans on stage as once again playwright Patrick Brown hits the right mark with his latest theatrical production at Centre Stage Theatre. This latest play Romi & Julie opened Boxing Day and has laughter by the bucketful and musical numbers that are upbeat and catchy so that even the children in the audience could sing along. Loosely based on the great Shakespearean tragedy of Romeo and Juliet, the play centres around two young star crossed lovers Romi (David Crossgill) from Gaza City and Julie (Keisha Patterson) from the Gullyside. The two locked eyes at a weekly border clash dance and sparks flew. But old family rivalry with one being from the ‘Andrews’ while the other of the ‘Porteous’ kin line means that the two should never have met much less marry and Julie’s father (Glen Campbell) especially does his utmost to prevent the union.
