Foster was elated to highlight that the Corolla performed well and upstaged its competitors. “That was a regional test. We did a wet break, dry break, slalom and a rough surface test. We also did a static test – you go through look and feel, bumper to bumper as you compare cars. Needless to say Toyota came out on top – we outperformed all of them,” Foster shared. The new models are longer and wider than their predecessors and offer more space so that you and your passengers travel more comfortably. As Foster put it, “Some things that jump out at me include the rear leg room that’s vastly improved because the car is longer and wider”. The remote trunk opener also makes its debut on the Corolla. “The trunk opener is now found on the key. You just hold down the button and the trunk opens – not usually found on this class of car,” Foster revealed
Also newly featured on the Corolla is a system that individualizes the doors to notify the driver which doors to notify the driver which doors are open, eliminating guessing. “In cars before, if a door was open, you would have to open and close every door to locate the problem, but the new Corolla specifically shows which door is open and this includes the trunk,” Foster disclosed.
The Optitron instrument cluster, another new feature, visibility at the controls clearer. “It just makes it that much easier to see – it’s a bright blue colour, which seems to glow. The panel has a multi-information display and gives you all the different readings that are there,” he continued. Features that are displayed include the clock, self indicator, fuel consumption and drivable range average. Additionally, the Corolla provides improved steering via an upgrade to its electronic power steering design, offering an 8% faster steering gear ratio for improved agility.

The Corolla is more fuel efficient in the feedback given from the eco drive indicator which encourages economically friendly driving. “It shows you when you are optimizing fuel efficiency. So if you are steady on the gas pedal, when you move off from the stop light, you just need to carefully press the gas pedal – the light stays indicating optimal fuel consumption. The light goes off to indicate when you “floor it” and therefore burn more fuel”, Foster explained. The Corolla offers 42 miles per gallon (mpg) and has a 1.6 dual VVTI engine.
The GLI can be yours for $3.7 million – and it offers some features that cannot be found in the XLI that costs $3.4 million at Toyota Jamaica Limited. Unique to the GLI is traction control, vehicle stability control, 7 airbags, fog lamps, alloy wheels and Bluetooth connectivity. Features both cars share include anti-theft immobilizer, factory alarm, wing mirror indicator lights, 4 wheel disc brakes and 60/40 split rear seats among other similarities.
