Practical Approach to Selling your car Practical Approach to Selling your car

So you have decided to sell your car. Whatever the reason, selling a car can be either an effortless and profitable experience or a painstaking, time-consuming and horrendous experience you won’t want to repeat. Leave nothing to chance; here are a few useful tips when selling your car, whether you plan to go through a dealer or attempt to sell privately.

Dealer or No Dealer
Selling your car to or through a dealer may save you time. Dealers are industry players with working automotive knowledge you may not readily have. They possess a larger contact list that may result in a quick sale for your car. A dealer’s reach will also allow him to spread the word over a larger demographic than you would if you decided to sell the vehicle yourself.

On the flip side, a dealer may ask for a portion of the profit from your sale which means less money in your pocket. If you choose to sell on your own, you would eliminate the middle man and may even get your total asking price; however, the sale may take longer. Additionally, your personal time would be interrupted in order to take calls from potential buyers, set up meetings or a test drive, among other things. If you go it alone, be strategic. Consider placing ads in print and social media to publicise your intentions to sell your car.

Preparing the car for sale

  • Before putting your car out there for all to see, detail the interior and exterior of the vehicle.
  • Wash and wax the exterior of the vehicle (including the engine and undercarriage).
  • Take your car for a general servicing (replacing oil and air filters, engine oil, transmission fluid etc.)
  • Vacuum the floor, seats, trunk and clean the roof lining
  • Clean and polish rims and tyres.
  • Replace or wash old floor mats.
