The VW Polo & VW Polo Cross

Rugged, yet sleek and sophisticated. Both expose visibly endearing assets at first encounter. There’s
no denying that these two are great beauties!

Every square inch of these pieces of craftsmanship will impress you, not to mention the details that go into fashioning their final finish – but then such is the fine art of German engineering.

Their beauty is unstoppable. And so, too, I quickly learned, are their ability to stand up to the rigours of Jamaica’s tough road conditions, much in the same way they’ve stood up to the scrutiny of the most discerning buyers.

At a crossroads as to which to take first, I reluctantly shifted gears to the VW Cross Polo, after being placed in the capable hands of ATL Automotive’s Brand Manager Rory McDonald. The VW Polo or Volkswagen Polo, if you like, is priced at a pretty neat $2,995,000. As against the bigger more fully loaded VW Cross Polo SUV. Why?

VW Polo

Apart from being the smaller of the two units, this compact car carries some of the nicest, most practical features you’ll ever find in comparable makes such as the Honda Fit and the Suzuki Swift.
It “shares the same Polo platform, 1400 c.c. 90 horsepower engine and 7 speed (DSG) direct shift gearbox which has 3 modes of drive”, as those in the Cross Polo, which is an even tougher, more aggressive vehicle with nice features to have on any wheels.

These days, with the price of gas going through the roof everyone has to be frugal. And that’s where a small car like the VW Polo comes in. With its “standard drive mode for the best fuel economy”, the ATL rep told Buzzz Magazine “People who are cost-conscious and want something they can park into tight spaces, want the Polo. They are people who are interested in fuel economy,” he drove emphasized.
Other features include “sport mode for more aggressive shifting and a full Tiptronic manual function that gives the driver control over the shifting points,” a great way of shifting into cruise control for those peak -hour traffic snarls.

So just who’s buying this compact and smartly engineered piece of work? “Young professionals and older folks,” we are told, and more and more older folks are said to be switching to the more economic option.
It’s a good buy for parents, too, who want the peace of mind of knowing that their young adults are getting around safely and economically. The Brand Manager added that while “there is a compromise with safety” in purchasing smaller vehicles given that they tend to sustain more damage during an accident – especially from the range of large vehicles on our roads – that limitation did not hold true for the VW Polo.
“More than likely,” he stoutly declared, “an SUV would sustain more damage than the VW Polo. It’s German!” – and his tone suggested I should already know this.

VW Cross Polo

One of the first noticeable differences between this model and the VW Polo is the “aggressive” body kit that the Cross Polo sports. A higher ground clearance and dual tone 17-inch alloy wheels as opposed to the 15-inch alloys on the standard Polo, makes it a nice fit, and roadsters will want to take off for weekends or just test its impressive sporty suspensions around the city.

Finished with sport bucket seats and colour-coded cross- stitched fabric, the Cross Polo’s larger sport steering wheel is also hand-stitched and reminiscent of the GTi. The VW Cross Polo comes in an exciting range of colours to suit many preferences and can be yours at a cool price of $3,495,000.00.
Did we mention cool! Erik Nicolaisen, that white guy who tried out his Jamaican accent in that cool VW ad about a year ago could take some kudos for the peak in sales that’s on now as McDonald noted the vehicles are being swooped up the moment they touch the pavement at ‘Germany’ (the name given to the Volkswagen showroom at ATL’s Oxford Road outfit in Kingston).

“It’s been a slam dunk all the way as both the Polo and Cross Polo are extremely spacious and comfortable and QUICK! They definitely stand above their competitors and new owners are enjoying their fantastic fuel economy,” he beamed.

Completing my tour of duty, the ATL rep turned to one of the first things that caught my attention. “The Polo’s hottest feature is that it’s sexy and stands out. It’s aggressive on the road so you look mean and confident,” he remarked.
