From commanding the stage of his high school concerts to taking on the Magnum Kings & Queens of Dancehall stage in 2012; Reggae Dancehall artiste Jason Vassell known as ‘Twinkle Brain’ is slowly but surely on his way to making his mark as a captivating, new talent in the entertainment industry. Born and raised in Port Antonio; Vassell took his passion for music and turned into a career. Christina Mais had a one on one with the entertainer as he spoke about his humble beginnings, his new EP and his journey so far.
“I started out in entertainment from I was toddler. In basic school I was in the drama group where we did school festivals and stuff, so the entertainment has always been in me. I like to make people smile and laugh even if I’m not doing a show,” says Vassell. After going by the name ‘Brain’ after high school he ended up meeting his manager Ricardo Tristan Palmer (son of legendary reggae artist Tristan Palmer ) who went by the name ‘Twinkle Boss’; they began toying with a few combinations and ultimately decided on the distinctive stage name ‘Twinkle Brain’.
Unique and different are two words that Vassell uses to describe his musical style and how he aims to portray himself overall as an artiste. Since his personal taste in music is so diverse, it was only natural that he made it a point to have his own music reflect that diversity as well.
lthough Beenie Man would be his top pick for a dream collaboration, some other names that would be on list include, Taurus Riley, Rihanna, Drake, Bunji Garlin, Destra Garcia, Burna Boy and Davido. When it comes to his own creative process, he draws inspiration from everyday life situations and what he observes from persons around him. As with everything else in life, working in the music industry comes with its own challenges and Vassell does his best to remain motivated.
“I just always try to stay focused, never lose track of what I’m doing. I always remember that I’m an artiste and my goal and aim and where I want to reach. So that keeps me motivated and pumped,” said Vassell. On days when he needs a break from it all he can usually be found playing soccer, listening to music or doing some spontaneous activity.
